Afterward, the architect starts working on the specifications and drawings. At a minimum, a complete set of architectural drawings comprises perspective drawings, elevations, sections, roof plans, and floor plans. 

Roof plans display the top view of the structure’s roof including skylights, roofing materials, hips, slopes, and other features. While floor plans show the room layouts and other attributes of each floor in a vertical orthographic projection. Contrarily, sections show the building’s view as if it has been cut along an imaginary line. Lastly, perspective drawings depict a 3-d view of the structure. 

What is Structural design? 

As the name implies, structural engineering is a disciple/ professional that deals with the structural elements of a project. The field prioritizes the feasibility, safety, and strength of materials used in a construction project. 

In general, the structure of a building consists of horizontal and vertical elements like slabs and columns. Therefore, the job of a structural engineer is to tailor these elements to fit the project’s architectural design. In other words, structural engineers design a building’s structure based on architectural drawings. While doing so, they have to consider things like the building’s dead, live, and environmental loads, ensuring that it remains upright. 

The relationship between engineers and architects 

Although engineers and architects have different roles in a construction project, they work together in designing a building. More notably, their relationship is very important in determining the success of the project. For instance, their coordination and communication with each other will define the safety and quality of the work being done. 

As mentioned earlier, a structural engineer focuses on the structural aspects of the building. At the same time, they emphasize the feasibility of the project, safety, and strength of the used materials.

In the design phase, an architect comes up with the aesthetic design of the development project. Afterward, the engineers produce structural designs based on foundations, drainage, grading, utilities, and load calculations. 

  • Work quality & design 

Architects create the design with proper layouts for lighting, ventilation, facility & room arrangement, land utilization, and dwelling space. While engineers find the personnel/ contractor responsible for supervising and implementing the design or maintaining work quality. Besides, engineering designs plan the ancillary components to support the architectural aspects of the design.
